I opened my eyes: it was already 11 am. I glanced at Samantha( that s the name of my mobile phone): one unread msg. In fact it is the msg alert bip that woke me.
-‘kot to ete? Vine enn fois, ena program la’ read the msg.
Yest2 night ban kamouads dan lari n me drank till late, celebratin Gamede a notre façon.
‘Lekor reyé net, pou kapav boir mem la?’
My Samantha rang.
-‘Vine enn fois, gajack p frai’ said the voice.
I jumped out of bed n in less than 30 mins I was wiz them. Gamat koumensé.

The liquor bottle… oops sorry, bottles were empty. One pal was searchin for the invisible hole that leaked our last bottle.
-‘Ki portée?’
-‘La mer. Tan dire lamer payé lakaisse en ce moment.’
Poste Lafayette (lafaya) is only 20 mins from our place. On that day it took us around 35 mins because of the rain, strong gusts n the ALCOHOL in our blood.
It was rainin cats n dogs. The wind said ‘ MOI KI LA’. The sea was roarin. The rain drops stung, driven by the wind. Bref Dame Nature was at work.
Poste Lafayette has always attracted many persons n it was kindda ‘hurricane party’ out here. Accordin to Suresh Boodhoo, #2 at Mu Met Services, in U.S many persons gather up to observe hurricanes n that s from where originated ‘hurricane parties.’
Around hundred persons were on the beaches n the cop jeeps that passed by didn’t bother to stop. Maybe the cops ti p, themselves, rinse zot lizié at that time.
Because the sea was really beautiful at that time. The waves rose n dropped, orchestrated by the wind. The sight valait le deplacement.

Back home.
The only inconvenience that I had to face was that my motorcycle, for some unknown reasons, refused to start when we decided to get home. So I had to drag her back home… gamat fini.

MBC i hate you un peu, bokou, à la folie
The clock says 1h40.
Postin something at this time may seem out-of-the-world to u but I think it s really important to point it out now. Coz couples of hours later this piece of news ll b stale.
The Barcelona vs Liverpool game s’est soldé by a win of the Kops (1-2).
But the real winner today is Bijaye Madhoo s MBC. Why? Here are the reasons:
- the match is supposed to kick off at 23h45 as per the say of M.Ramsamy in Sport Zoom. But it starts at 00h10. 23 minutes have already been played and Liverpool s one nil down. Was it delayed purposely? Allez savoir.
- There were interruptions at the 48th , 59th and 64th minute during the match. Who was doing that? I don’t have the answer. Maybe some Manu fan sittin at the MBC who doesn’t like liv’pool or the cable tv company for obvious reasons…
43rd minute: Craig Bellamy heads in for Liv’pool. Yes, the movai garson who reportedly hit Riise with a golf club after a night out in Portugal.
After the goal, he imitated a golf swing.
Before the 80 mins mark, Riise nailed Barça from a pass of his team mate cum hitter.
1-2 is the final score. YOU LL NEVER WALK ALONE.

St Valentine’s Day

Il n’y a pas d’amour, n’y a que des preuves d’amour
Paul Reverdy
Should I wish a Happy Valentine’s Day or Happy Commercial Valentine’s Day to Everyone….
Commercial Centres are “les lieux incortournables” of this type of event…. No need to say that the Happy World House, The Port-Louis Waterfront and other big commercial centres will be crowded with couples on the 14th February….
If you happen to visit the pages of L’Express of this week… you will get all types of invitations to celebrate the St Valentine: Restaurants, Discount offers, … but of course, there is always a price to pay…
Some tag lines are real interesting, such as:
- Vivez L’amour aux Centres Commerciaux Phoenix et Riche-Terre
- MCB Passionément
- Peut-il y avoir une fête sans Ferrero? Savourez et Partagez la joie de la Saint Valentin avec Ferrero?
- Dites je t’M avec des amours de cadeaux. Profitez de nos prix coup de coeur.
And of course, our University (UoM) will also be of the St Valentine’s Party….. Selling of Roses and Gifts in front of the Cafetaria… Will Emtel be the Partner again this Year? Was a great commercial attraction last year with all its decors in the vicinity of the Cafetaria and HAssen Rojoah animating the show!!!
As a student of Communication, I do think the term LOVE falls part into the sharing ideology of Communication between two people…But my mind is ticking about something: Do we need a day… only A day to celebrate LOVE? Aren’t everyday a day to love and care for the other…
By the way, if you want to buy a Red Rose tomorrow, save up to Rs500 for a real Rose button… and bear in mind that this same Rose would sell at around Rs25 outside Valentine’s Season…
A history link to St Valentine’s Day…

Media coverage of Iraq war
I watched, “Listening Post” on Al-Jazeera sme days back..the issue was about the media’s coverage of the war in Iraq. This program was more focused on the US media and its role in the war.
A heated debate about the notion of objectivity in the media. US media accused of biais n being subjective n pro-Bush in their coverage of the war. Their role in not stopping the war was also questioned.
Looking for more info on the notion of objectivity, I found this on the net:
Embedding the Truth
A Cross-Cultural Analysis of Objectivity and Television Coverage of the Iraq War
By Sean Aday, Steven Livingston and Maeve Hebert
Abstract:
This article reports on a cross-cultural analysis of television coverage of the 2003 Iraq War that seeks to assess and understand the dimensions of objectivity in the news during wartime. A total of 1,820 stories on five American networks (ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN, Fox News Channel [FNC]) and on the Arab satellite channel Al Jazeera were included in the study. The study assessed bias on two levels:tone of individual stories and the macro-level portrait of the war offered by each network. Results showed that at the story level, the overwhelming number of stories broadcast by Al Jazeera and the American networks other than FNC were balanced. Yet the data also revealed a strong bias in support of the American-led war effort at FNC and important differences in how the various networks covered the war.
Also, broadcasters showed a war devoid of blood, dissent, and diplomacy, focusing instead on a sanitized version of combat. Overall, the study found evidence that the news norm of objectivity is defined in large part by culture and ideology more than events, as the norm would imply. The study also explored in detail the coverage of embedded reporters to assess their objectivity and compare their coverage to other types of reporters, especially “unilaterals” with whom they shared the battlefield.

UK wants to stop Chagossian return

The British government is asking a court to ban 2,000 islanders from ever returning to their homes. The Chagossians faces new dilemma.Even if UK’s high courts have ruled twice that the people were illegally removed, the UK government has decided to appeal this decision.
Chagossians hopes are once again shattered. Why cant the British acknowledge its past mistakes? Why not let them live on the other islands? But this battle will continue as the islanders say they will not give up until they return to their “Indian ocean paradise”.
“We came here in order to ask for our rights, for our fundamental rights, for our dignity as a people, because everyone has a right to live on his birthplace” Olivier Bancoult, leader of the Chagos Refugees group

Media Stereotyping
A dictionary definition of stereotype is: “One that is regarded as embodying or conforming to a set image or type”. Stereotyping is also a technique that “attempts to arouse prejudices in an audience by labeling the object of the propaganda campaign as something the target audience fears, hates, loathes, or finds undesirable”. Stereotypes act like codes that give audiences a quick, common understanding of a person or group of people- usually relating to their class, ethnicity or race, gender, sexual orientation, social role or occupation.
Media and Women.
“We don’t need Afghan-style burquas to disappear as women. We disappear in reverse-by revamping and revealing our bodies to meet externally imposed visions of female beauty” Robin Gerber.
The content is true to our post-modern era whereby a woman is seen to be of the pro-active and post-modern type only if she is seen semi-naked or almost completely in the nude. In fact, images of female bodies are everywhere. Women -and their body parts- sell everything from food to cars. Newspaper adverts and movies reinforce the importance of a thin body as a measure of a woman’s worth. Stereotyping of the typical white and dieted portrayal of women in the media has caused women around the world to feel insecure about their own self and life.
The concept of Whiteness and White Privilege in the Media
“White people create the dominant images of the world, and don’t quite see that they thus construct the world in their image.” Richard Dyer
The representation of ethnic minorities has also given rise to broad-based stereotyping through the medium of cinema and newspaper adverts as well. In fact, in the media, there is the concept of being “white washed”. White supremacy prevails over all newspaper adverts as well as movies and television commercials and advertisements. This concept is based on the fact that the large majority of the people see on television, movies, magazines and newspapers are white. And when the media choose to represent minorities, they seem to place them in very stereotypical ways.
So now, let us talk us talk about the winner Shilpa Shetty from the Celebrity Big Brother Show…. And the talks about racism rose up all throughout the world. What do u think? Is it fair-play that Shilpa won the show or is it because of the ‘racism’ ruccus during the 1st two weeks that favoured a more nation-wide voting against racism that helped Shilpa win the contest?
