Talk on News Media, New Media and Elections

Ellen Hume
The US Embassy in collaboration with the Communication Studies Unit of FSSH is organisinf a talk on the above theme by Ellen Hume, US Media expert, on Thursday, October 22, 2009 from 12 30-14 00 hours at the University of Mauritius.

The talk will the held in the old Engineering Building in Lecture Theatre 1 (to access, take the lift in the New Engineering Tower to the second floor, then take the long corridor on the left. LT1 is on the right at the end of the corridor).

Mrs. Ellen Hume is visiting Mauritius under the U.S. Department of State’s Speaker Program. The main theme of her program in Mauritius is: Press Freedom and Journalism Ethics.

Ellen Hume is an Annenberg Fellow in Civic Media at the Center for Media and Communication Studies at Central European University in Budapest. Until June 2009, she was research director of the Center for Future Civic Media at MIT. Hume founded the Center on Media and Society at UMass Boston in 2004 in order to work with students and community media. She is a writer and lecturer about journalism journalism’s role in democracy; the Internet; civic engagement and ethics.

This is the first time in Mauritian universities’ history that an inter-tertiary competition is being organised by the Ministry of Youth and Sports.
