Storytelling

Storytelling is what politicians use to set the agenda of agenda-setters. Communication Advisors engineer plans to CONTROL what is said about their boss in the media. That is they voluntarily feed positive stories about their boss to the media and the latter, innocently, depicts the intended image.

An example, according to Envoyé Spécial, is the romance [and mariage] of Sarkozy and Bruni. Magazines and newspapers, which shouted on roofs tops that they got the latest about the Sarkozy and Bruni affair, were apparently fed by the comm office of the President. At that time surveys showed a drop in the number of people who still see him as the President of France.

I was surprised when I saw the report titled ‘Actualité’ of Envoyé Spécial and this puts into question what we are served everyday in newspapers. That is the audience’s agenda is set by media houses and the latter’s agenda is set by politicians.

Hopefully the MBC will broadcast that episode of Envoyé Spécial on Monday 19/05/08. Below is the URL of the site of Envoyé Spécial.

The Mediacom Studio is alive

I am pleased to announce that the Communication Studies Unit is now equipped with a multimedia studio which I have set up with (a lot of) help from Avinash (my husband who is a lecturer in the Computer Science dept). The studio has been baptised Mediacom Studio and even has a website which we have launched yesterday at www.mediacomstudio.com

The facility has been created thanks to funding from the UNESCO-IPDC which approved my project last year. Avinash has been the mastermind behind the technical setup and has spent a lot of time selecting and fine-tuning our equipment list. We had a lot of constraints such as limited availability of certain items and also the dollar exchange rate which shrunk our budget. But, we managed to have a nice setup nevertheless with:

- Apple iMacs complete with the iLife and iWork suites
- Panasonic HD camcorders with tripods and a lighting kit
- Olympus audio recorders with tie-clip microphones
- Philips LCD TV, DVD player and an Apple TV
- a gigabit local network

The idea is to provide more hands-on practical training to our Communication and Journalism students, to give them the opportunity to come up with professional products and showcase them on the website.

Talk on ‘The Changing Face of Cultural Globalization’

Our external examiner Prof Jan Servaes will give a talk on ‘The Changing Face of Cultural Globalization’ on Wednesday 20th June at the University of Mauritius. An abstract of his presentation can be found here.
The talk will be open to all. Needless to say that all Communication students are particularly encouraged to attend!

Doit-on envisager les punitions corporelles à l’école?!?

Jeudi 30 mai, j’étais en route pour mon examen de psychologie. Ce jour la j’avais dormi que 2hr car j’étais plonger dans mes notes jusqu’à 4hr du mat. Puis suis parti au lit en laissant un message à Jade lui demandant de me faire un miss call a 6hr. Elle a tenu promesse comme d’habitude (merci). J’étais dans les râles mais mes révisions de dernières minutes me forçaient à tenir le coup. Bref, je me hâtais de tout faire, petit déjeuner, douche, et courir vers l’arrêt d’autobus juste pour avoir quelques minutes de lecture en plus.

Arrivé à la gare Victoria j’ai pris le premier bus en partance vers Réduit et c’est la que je fis malgré moi la connaissance de quelques étudiants d’un quelconque collège. Ils étaient une quinzaine groupés à l’arrière de l’autobus et partaient à Réduit pour le Sport Day organisé par leur collège (*manque de responsabilité de la part du collège car il aurait du louer un bus pour la sécurité des élèves). On aurait cru que le bus partait en excursion, le toit de l’autobus servait de ravanne et les ‘jeunes’ braillaient des chansons osées avec des paroles obscènes et vulgaires. Les remarques et les complaintes du chauffeur ainsi que des autres passagers les laissaient indifférents, ils en faisaient même plus pour montrer leur audace. J’en ai fait des bêtises du temps où j’étais étudiant, mais je n’avais jamais à ma connaissance déranger les gens ou importuner qui que ce soit avec mes délires d’adolescent.

Comment ces jeunes en sont-ils arrivés à ce point? Il est certes qu’il y a un manque d’éducation, mais à qui la faute! Est-ce la faute des parents, qui négligent leurs enfants? Est-ce qu’ils savent à quoi ressemble leurs progénitures derrière leurs dos? C’est peut-être la faute au system scolaire car à première vu tout commence à la gare, dans les cours de récréation, dans le bus, en classe…? Cela nous pousse à penser: les profs sont-ils aptes à faire face à des telles situations, ont-ils la formation requise pour tenir tête à cette jeunesse décadente? Jusqu’où peut-on mêler la loi dans les affaires juvéniles, doit-on éduquer les parents avant d’éduquer les enfants? Faut-il les apprendre comment être des bons pères et mères, savent-ils comment user de l’autorité parentale, sont-ils respecter?

Il y a eu des laisser passer et cela à plusieurs niveaux. Les parents sont eux même mal éduquer. Une mère de 17 - 18 ans peut-elle faire l’avenir d’un enfant en compagnie d’un père de 19 ans ou moins! J’en connais beaucoup qui me diront que le system éducatif n’est plus le même. Les profs ne sont plus ce qu’ils étaient dans le temps. Le media empire les choses d’une certaine façon. Le monde a changé, nous devrions faire autant dans notre system éducatif et adopter une relation plus appropriée envers cette jeunesse décalente.

Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee OP! It’s all over for the 4th Year Bsc Communication Studies with Specialisation in Business/Journalism!!!! It is certainly with great pleasure and an “ouff de soulagement” that we have ended our exams!…FOUR Years of semesterly exams and an erratic working schedule are over! It is still inbelievable!!!

It is also with certain enthusiasm that we said our Goodbyes to Mr Leeldharry(don’t know how to spell his name well!!!). After 4 years, he has come to recognize us easily as THE COMMUNICATION Batch among all those students…. Our class used to often arrange for teh provision of classes with him….We paid our due thanks to him. and We will never forget how he managed to find us a class that would start at 7h15 on a saturday morning for our journalism course with Ryan. He has always understand our motives for classs allocation: We are working people and we have to fit the timetable with our working schedule as well as that of the lecturers!!!!

Some of the most memorable moments include:

• Interview set-up and editing at the MBC
• Stephen Perry’s Class - Media Style
• Khooduruth’s classes(Development Commn & Criminality/Deviance)
• Consumer Culture, Advertising and New Forms of Media classes… and specially those related to IT

As for me, it will be real boring only to work and then comes home afterwards… May be i’ll have to undertake other studies or start thinking about Marriage!!! Pa gagne tracas, pou invite zot pou mo nikah et briani la!

Anywayz, Best of Luck for all those who have a year or years to go…. Be patient… Four Years isn’t that long(you’ll see)…. La perseverance se paye a la fin….
