Panel Discussion on US elections

There will be a panel discussion on the presidential elections in the USA on Wednesday 29th October at 12.30 p.m. in Lecture Theatre 2 at UOM.

The panellists will include:
- Craig White, First Secretary / Public Affairs Officer at the US Embassy
- Vijay Makhan, Former Diplomat

The moderator will be Roukaya Kasenally

This will be an interesting presentation / debate 6 days before the elections (American citizens will vote on 4th Nov) as well as a good follow-up to the series of Digital Video Conferences which were organised recently by the US Embassy.

To put you in the picture, the latest DVC which took place on the 22nd October addressed the following issues inter alia:
- the Electoral College system (there is no direct vote for the candidates; instead votes vote for Electors who pledge to vote for a ticket. Read this for a quick explanation)
- the coverage of the elections by the mainstream media and alternative media (with a regression in mainstream media coverage and, conversely, a lot of internet resources including former mainstream journalists publishing information on their websites)
- the sidelining of third party candidates (there are 4 other candidates running. Read this for some more info)
- surveys and the Bradley effect, campaign financing, advertising spots, first ladies, participation in comedy shows, minorities, etc.

Play ‘Baraz’ on campus

Gaston Valayden’s well acclaimed play ‘Baraz’ will be staged this Thursday 11th September at noon in the Raised Plaza on campus. The play, which lasts 45 minutes, will be followed by a debate on the theme of ethnic conflicts (‘communalisme’ as we say in Creole).

Synopsis:
2 Mauritian families of different communities are at loggerheads (except for their respeective son and daughter). One day, they decide to create a fence between the two houses whilst pouring communal abuse upon each other… until a cyclone devastates the region and their fence.

The objective of the event is to create human rights awareness and sensitize students on the problematic of communalism in the country.

The event is organised by Amnesty International.

Entrance is free.

Talk on Media is on 19th

To all those interested in the talk on Media and Democracy which I announced in the last post:

The talk is on Tuesday 19th Wednesday 20th August, not Wednesday 29th as I wrote.

Sorry about that. Please feel free to disseminate and let me know who will attend so we may move to a bigger room if we have a crowd.

The Mauritius College of the Air (MCA)

The MCA is a parastatal organisation under the aegis of the ministry of education and human resources since 1985,established under the MCA Act. The object of the college is to promote education, arts, science and culture generally through mass media.

One of the two operational arms of the MCA is the Media Division, which produces audio-visual materials for Educational purpose…..a support for primary and secondary schools, as well as for adult and continuing education.

I will be very grateful to you people if you could share with me your views and perceptions about the educational programmes of the MCA.  Teachers and even students of several secondary schools  have confirmed that these programmes are very useful, where images have proved to be better than thousand words. Various subjects are better understood.

What is your opinion on having audio-visual sessions inserted into the University’s modules? Do you think it will be worth for the MCA to start produce programmes for tertiary level as well,as it’s objective is to provide educational services??? For example, won’t it be interesting for year 1 communication students to view a programme of how a press or advertising company works? so many programmes could be produced for the various courses of the different faculties.

Do you think the creation of  an educational television channel for the MCA would be a good idea? Finally, instead of the MCA and MBC to be complementary or partners,do you get the impression that they are rivals?

please do share all your opinions with me as it will be of a tremendous help in writing my workplacement report.

Just trying find out good recommendations for the MCA..lolllzzz

I discovered it some days ago and guess I am the last one to know about Internet Public Library. Well, if am not then check it out for yourself @ www.ipl.org. The site appears to contain reliable sources for almost any reference question. There are links to Blogs by subject. There are style and writing guides and on and on. What i found really fantastic is the ‘newspapers around the world’…indeed I had a look on Indian and African different newspapers!!!! hhhhmmm virtual librarianship 2222 goooood.

We are finally there. Four English teams ( Mant Utd, Chelsea, Liverpool, Arsenal) out of the eight that qualified. The other four are Barcelona (Spain), Roma (Italy), Fenebahce (Turkey) and Schalke (Germany).

Some ( the canal + guys) say that this will be the consolation prize for England as it ll watch Euro 2008 with no particular interest.

They also add (since Lyon is out) that Arsenal is the favourite, with its gamut of frenchies headed by Arsene.

So what the draw of the quarter finals( scheduled for friday 14/03) has in store? Liv’pool vs chelsea, Man utd vs Barca, Arsenal vs Roma? Que du gratin…

The pity is that anyone can play anyone in the last eight, meaning English teams may be drawn against each other.

What about Man Utd vs Liv’pool, for the kops to forget the previous humiliation?

Her Majesty The Queen diffuse ses vœux sur YouTube
