The University of Mauritius is not only a place where students are welcomed to continue their tertiary studies but it also offers opportunities to hawkers to earn their living. One might think that it is an easy task as it is an independent job with no fixed schedule but actually, it is not. Mrs Amrita owns this lorry above in which she carries the goods that she prepared at 3am in order to arrive at the university at 8!

Here we see that Mrs Amrita is keen with cleanliness, she wears gloves and makes use of plastic bags when serving her clients.

She sells mainly vegetables like Tomatoes, Beans, Cauliflowers, Cabbages and Carrots. In order to increase her clientele, she makes sure that her vegetables are fresh as her earnings depend exclusively on the sales of her goods. She also works at the market of St Pierre twice per week. We can thus imagine how hard it might be for her to have a variable salary at the end of the month.
